Expectation, anticipation, hope…all very human…all based on the known, water from a familiar well. They set us up for disappointment and even depression.
What does it take to step into the unknown? More than courage – it takes a kind of emptiness that allows love and the creative spirit to move us beyond the ego’s needs. Love calls us outward, toward the sweet water of generosity that gives without the need for a return cup, because at the same time, the best in us is being brought through.
Transcending the narrow realm of the ego – not easy – I walk into a new country – wider, rewarding in itself. The new land isn’t filled with thornless roses, but offers unimaginable surprises. Not a matter of courage to enter that realm, but faith in my human spirit to rise above ambiguity, with a capacity for love, generosity, patience and empathy.
How do I find that? It must be discovered, almost like epiphanies. What can help is a response to beauty, a deep one, as in nature (mountains, meadows, wildflowers, rocks, rivers, trees, oceans, lakes and animals) and a response to art which brings opposites into play, as both harmony and disharmony. Experiencing these outside phenomena can bring a realization that these beauties lie within us (we couldn’t repond it that weren’t true). Or how about when we read or see a movie or play that deals with genuine love? When I am moved, it’s because I have the same capacity…sometimes not fulfilled.
Reading the biblical psalms…”I shall fear no evil, for thou art with me.” Who is that “thou” if not a part of myself, transcendant, trustworthy and helpful in times of need, even of despair? When I call on a friend, I’m relying on that person’s spirit…more than my own. When I’m feeling weak or discouraged…I may lose sight of the inner “thou”…and often it IS a big help to have someone else’s “thou” at hand. But it’s also important to be aware of what I’m projecting. When others call on us, it’s our “thou” that rises.
